Do you see my son?
I know what you see.
You see that he knows how to scream really loud.
You see that he can throw really far.
You see that he doesn’t listen to you.
Maybe you feel at a loss.
Maybe you don’t know how to handle him.
Maybe you don’t feel like you’re in control.
He doesn’t fit into a box - who said that’s necessary?
He doesn’t behave the way you want him to - who said he needs to?
Do you know what I see?
A child that likes to explore and discover.
A child that likes to try new things.
A child with very big feelings.
A child that wants to be independent.
A child who needs to be loved and respected.
Do you like going to new places, trying new things?
Do you ever feel mad or angry?
Are you still learning how to care for yourself when you’re down?
Do you know who to reach out to when you need help?
Do you know how to navigate conflict?
Do you know how to stay calm when your feelings are hurt?
It takes a lifetime to learn, we are all learning.
So tell me.
Why do you expect my child to listen every time you tell him “no”?
Why do you think he knows how to manage his emotions?
Why shouldn’t he be given the space to be himself?
And why doesn't he deserve the basic love a child deserves?
How would you feel if you were told you’re always in the way?
How would you feel if you’re angry and told to calm down?
How would you feel if your natural disposition was shamed?
I get it. Big personalities are big.
Please handle with love. And if you can’t, please do nothing at all.
